It’s pretty simple, the LR3 is the next great collectible Land Rover. The restored Defender market is what it is, a rich man’s game to sell an expensive but impractical piece of status metal. I’ve seen more Defenders for sale on the sides of the road in tony places like the Vineyard than I’ve seen on the trail.
In contrast the LR3 brings the burly, boxy legit offroad Land Rover heritage and marries it to actual practical stuff like air bags, side impact pro and Terrain Response. Also parts are easily gettable and you can do much of the work (including the air suspension) yourself over the long term.
So it’s really more about you who YOU are. Are you a trophy hunter? If so, that’s cool, please move along. Or are you a builder and a doer? If so, then welcome home.

Each vehicle is priced uniquely, reflecting its unique provenance, level of mods, and our general level of pique at the time we had to fix the various bugs each beast brings into the yard. These aren’t new trucks ya see, so you’ll basically me making an inherently stupid decision to buy an old truck for material amounts of moolah. What you get is a piece of extremely usable badassery that will outdrive, outclimb and outclass anything out there. But yeah, they aint free — but what worth it ever is? Anyway plan on spending a year’s tuition or perhaps a bit less at your kid’s snotty little school. Or spend it on your kids, Jesus WTF is wrong with you?

You definitely should buy one. And you should also definitely ensure that you always have access to a field tech to reboot the thing once you drain the battery, by you know opening the door few times too many. Works great in the outback, or the anywhere other than close to a dealer.

Again you definitely should, you should buy as many rebuilt Defenders as you can afford. For most of us, <that value will = 0.> And for those of you that do, well pls do enjoy the lack of side impact, cruise control, A/C and the fact that pretty much any conversation will be impossible whilst driving (maybe that’s a plus for some of y’all — SNARF SNARF!).

Well Christian and Vera from LRTime have pretty much nailed this one, but basically the LR3 looks better, has longer range, is easier to work (especially in the field) and isn’t prone to exploding timing chains. Apart from that if you really want a mall crawla then I’d suggest you buy a Toyota.

Because Magellan circumnavigated the whole fuckin’ world bro…
Also because the Magellanic Cloud was my father’s specialty focus during his early optical astronomy career (like before he built the Hubble Space Telescope).
